Primera Division September 24

Real Madrid 7-1 Sporting Gijon

Sporting lost 6-1 against Barcelona at their home stadium on Sunday and will try to win their first points in the championship at the Bernabéu tonight. Real Madrid and Sporting go way back and have always had strong ties. Many players have played for both teams, such as former Real Madrid academy player David Barral and Mate Bilic.

Three consecutive victories have allowed Bernd Schuster's men to forget about their Matchday 1 defeat against Deportivo. The squad is in high spirits despite the tight schedule that will see them face Sporting, Betis and Zenit tonight, on Saturday and Tuesday, respectively.

This schedule, as well as a few injuries, will force Schuster to use a rotation system again. De la Red and Higuaín have chances of making the starting lineup now that Guti, Sneijder and Gago are injured. They both started against Racing and created the play that gave the Whites their first strike of the evening.

The German coach wants his team to score a goal as soon as possible and the fans want the players to showcase brilliant football. In order to avoid this from happening, Sporting coach Manolo Preciado has made several changes on his team, leaving regulars Jorge, Sastre and Matabuena back in Gijón. On the other hand, Neru, Diego Camacho, Pablo de Lucas and Omar have made their first squad list this season. A setback for Sporting is Croatian striker Mate Bilic's niggle on the right ankle.

Half of Gijon's squad comes from its youth system, the Ángel Viejo Football Academy -popularly known as Mareo-. Its is full of talent and produces many future professionals, some of which will like to leave a good impression at the Bernabéu tonight.

Barcelona 3-2 Real Betis

Barça have beaten Betis to collect their second consecutive set of three points in the league. Despite Barça taking a two-goal lead, Betis levelled affairs in the second half but Gudjohnsen was at hand to grab a late winner.

Barça’s good form continues, and their victory made the city’s Mercè celebrations all the more complete. After the 6-1 win in Gijón on Sunday, they beat Betis 3-2 in a gripping encounter. Six points in less than a week, and Barça go sailing up the table.
